New Title! - The Nonviolent Communication Book of Quotes
A comprehensive collection, The Nonviolent Communication Book of Quotes by NVC founder Marshall B. Rosenberg draws not only from other books and interviews, but also from the internet and previously unpublished workshops. It illuminates his revolutionary
four-part Nonviolent Communication (NVC) process and shows the myriad ways NVC makes life more wonderful through the joy of compassionate giving. This essential compilation invites us to transform our lives, our work, our world.
What People are Saying “This book is an absolute gem! “Marshall’s voice is loud and clear. Organized by topics, this book offers us a way into the heart of Marshall’s teachings. “It dispels any doubt about NVC being a way of life, more than a system of communication. And it clarifies that NVC is a spirituality that inclines toward social change for the benefit of all. “Brilliant.” —STEPHANIE BACHMANN MATTEI, coauthor of The Heart of Nonviolent Communication, certified trainer and assessor with CNVC, and certified teacher in Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction
Parent Peer Leadership Program Accepting Applications for 2024 The PPLP is a nine-month program, co-lead by Ingrid Bauer (Certified Trainer with the Center for Nonviolent Communication - CNVC) and Stephanie Bachmann Mattei, (CNVC Certified Trainer and CNVC Assessor) aimed at nurturing and developing leaders who are committed to spreading Nonviolent Communication (NVC) to parents, teachers and youth-serving professionals in their communities, especially in those regions

Nonviolent Communication and Woke Politics |
How does Nonviolent Communication (NVC) address the topics of Woke Politics, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI), Critical Race Theory (CRT), and Cancel Culture? To be clear, the above are distinct and separate topics, fields of inquiry, study, and work. In this article I attempt to describe how you might view the significant overlap and common ground shared among these topics using the lens of NVC. Before approaching the above question, here are some basic, working definitions for
commonly used terms including NVC. “Nonviolent Communication” (NVC) is a framework developed by Dr. Marshall Rosenberg, Ph.D., that excels at creating mutual understanding and a level of connection through which you can prevent and resolve misunderstandings and conflicts consistently, as well as deepen and improve both personal and professional
relationships. NVC has both concrete tools, as well as an underlying intention. The underlying intention is about arriving at a high quality of connection and being willing to work toward mutually satisfying outcomes. The tools of NVC focus primarily in three areas: self-connection (interior clarity), compassionate listening (empathy), and
authentic self-expression (honesty). “Woke” comes from the word “awake” and refers to awareness of social inequality and injustice. “Woke politics” refers to political and social movements
associated with raising awareness about issues of social inequality and injustice. “DEI” (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) is an often-used acronym usually referring to workplace diversity and social justice efforts. I also like the less-common JEDI (justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion)... Read More
I Faced My Fear and My Fear Didn't Win by Beth Banning
Hey There! I have something personal to share with you. For the longest time, I was terrified of conflict. I mean, full-on sweaty palms, stomach-churning, "I'd rather be anywhere but here," scared. Whenever a hint of disagreement arose, I'd find ways to sidestep it, change the subject, or nod and smile even if I felt
differently. Ouch!!! It was like having a splinter that I refused to remove. At first, it was just a tiny, nagging discomfort, something I could ignore. Read More
A Veteran's Day Reflection / Combat to Teaching by Paul Ruez, M.Ed.
We regret not posting this article in our November newsletter but still wanted to share its valuable content even if delayed. History is tragically loaded with examples of what happens when members of societies fail to learn, teach and practice collaborative skills which work. By “working” I mean skills which let people identify needs and work to meet those needs without hurting one another. Here I am speaking about turning disagreement into opportunity. Disagreements have the potential to help clarify and refine understanding and points of view as opposed to inflaming and exacerbating differences. Our military and first responders often use their missions to stabilize inflamed situations which enabled less bloody conflict to prevail - this I encourage and honor.... Read More |
WHILE WE MAY not consider the way we talk to be “violent,” our words often lead to hurt and pain, whether for others or for ourselves. Marshall Rosenberg |

CATS Acrobats in furry coats. Believe they “own” you. Connoisseurs of comfort. Dogs drool, cats rule. Eager to be adopted. Furballs and foibles. Great mouse keepers. Hate to be disturbed Ipurr, therefor I am. Juggle busy schedules. Knead you. Love to bring “gifts.” Make no apologies. Never have bad hair days. One is rarely enough. Paws-itively purr-fect. Quick on the claw. Rodent wranglers. Sand paper kisses. "The dog did it.” Uncanny healers. Vivacious after catnip. Wash away the blues. Xpect clean litter boxes. Yoga

IN NVC, ALL names [in the sense of name-calling] are tragic expressions of unmet needs. An NVC-er asks himself, when the names are coming at him, “What is this person wanting that they’re not getting?” Tragically, they don’t know any other way of saying the need except to call the name. THERE’S TWO KINDS of pain: that pain that comes from just staying with life and being with mourning a loss, and then there’s this other kind of pain that comes from should kind of thinking. THESE LABELS OF . . . right/wrong, good/bad, normal/abnormal . . . any kind of label that’s static about a human being, is missing the human being. Because human beings change from moment to moment. Therefore, if we want to understand human beings, we need a process language, not a static
language. Marshall Rosenberg |

The Jackal as a Teacher In Compassionate Communication, we use the jackal as our metaphor for that part of us that is critical, judgmental, or self-righteous. We chose the jackal image because they walk
low to the ground, tend to be more interested in satisfying themselves in the moment, and are less likely to consider the future ramifications of their actions. My inner jackal says things to me like: “Who do you think you are? You can’t do THAT! You are too much—too intense, too demanding, too weak . . . ” Can you relate to this jackal? Or maybe you have your own version. I used to ignore my own inner jackal because I thought it was mean and uncaring. Then, after much empathy, I started to realize that it holds wisdom for me. When it tells me that I’m too intense, I believe it is trying to protect me from rejection. When it tells me, “You can’t do that!,” I believe it is trying to protect me from the disappointment of failure. I may not enjoy its methods, but I now know that it has my best interests at heart. Do not think that ignoring your jackal will be healing. The more you ignore your jackal, the louder and fiercer it howls! Your jackal truly cares about your well-being. Hear it, empathize with it, learn its intentions, and create more satisfying strategies to meet your needs. This journey is filled with self-care, love, nurturing, and healing for
both of you. Pay attention to what your inner jackal has to teach you today. |
