We Shall Have to Begin With the ChildrenBy Stephanie Bachmann Mattei As citizens of the world, witnessing the events of the last decade, we have often felt helpless in the face of injustice, both visible and invisible. We’ve seen acts of physical and emotional violence go unchecked, watched as short-term gains are prioritized over
long-term well-being, and endured an increasingly unequal distribution of resources and opportunities. On a personal level, we spend our daily lives just making sure that we have what we need, putting up with situations where we feel powerless to effect change. Whether we want it or not, we can feel that we are simply part of the system that perpetuates itself and drags us along, choiceless and powerless. With all the things
going on in the world today, many of us realize that, with a few exceptions, the leadership we are witnessing does not match our needs. What are the qualities we dream of seeing? What do we want for the young people who are growing up under our care? How do we imagine their future? Can we dream of Leaders that can support us and channel our energy in direction that would make our lives and theirs more meaningful, harmonious and joyful... IT’S EXTREMELY IMPORTANT that we build into our lives opportunities to exchange sincere gratitude, that we have opportunities to express it to others and to receive it. Marshall Rosenberg |
The Relationship Foundation
Help Underserved Schools with Nonviolent Communication The Relationship Foundation is a small nonprofit with a big vision, making an impact in Social and Emotional Learning by introducing Nonviolent Communication (NVC). Nonviolent Communication is a practice of expressing one’s needs
and feelings without blame or judgment and listening empathically. Teachers have commented that using NVC in the classroom has improved student behavior and academics. Another teacher said, “in my 20 years of teaching, I have never seen anything like this.” Ten underserved schools have requested the curriculum and training sessions
for their students and teachers. Your donation will help provide much-needed training sessions and curricula for underserved schools.

THE MORE GRATITUDE is a part of our life . . . the more fuel we have to be a giraffe in a jackal-speaking world. Marshall Rosenberg |
SO THERE IS a severe fuel shortage on this planet. It’s amazing how many people are gratitude-starved. They’re not getting the gratitude necessary to know that we have met our needs to enrich life. And if we’re not getting that gratitude back, regularly, to confirm that that need is being met, the cost of not having our need for meaning met is enormous. It just takes the joy out of
life. Takes the energy out of life. Marshall Rosenberg |

SO WE NEED to be, above all, very clear that we not mix up gratitude as a need. We don’t need gratitude. If we think we need gratitude, then we’re suckers to live our life trying to get approval from others. Gratitude is very important, but not as a need. It’s necessary as a confirmation that our need was met. Marshall Rosenberg |
SO WHATEVER WORDS I use are not as important as where am I connected. The words are not empathy. The connection is the empathy. When this person feels that I’m connected . . . that’s empathy. Not when I think I’m giving them empathy. . . . Whatever words get me there, I’ll use Marshall

Raising Children Compassionately - Chapter 3
The Surprising Purpose of Anger - Chapter 3 |
NOW, IT’S NOT enough that we do things out of an intention to enrich life, we have to have a feedback mechanism. And gratitude is that feedback mechanism. But unfortunately the domination world, seeing the power of this, has learned to turn this natural function into an oppression by getting people addicted to rewards. It distorts the need to enrich life. Marshall Rosenberg |
Certified Trainers & Sharing NVC
CNVC is committed to the vision of a critical mass of the world's population using Nonviolent Communication (NVC) to resolve differences peacefully. A strong community of qualified trainers will play an important role in the realization of this goal.
|
SO, THE FIRST thing that I would suggest, then, in the giving of gratitude to other people, is to be very careful that you never give gratitude as a reward. Never give gratitude to build up someone’s confidence in themself. In other words, don’t use it as a manipulation to create something in the other person. Marshall Rosenberg |
The NVC Academy offers hundreds of affordable online personal growth courses and resources to learn Nonviolent Communication from home.
|
The Center for Nonviolent Communication
The Center for Nonviolent Communication (CNVC) is a global organization that supports the learning and sharing of Nonviolent Communication (NVC), and helps people peacefully and effectively resolve conflicts in personal, organizational, and political settings.

THE INTENT IS very important in giving gratitude. It must be only to celebrate life. To celebrate a need of ours getting met. Absolutely no intent to reward the other person, just coming from the heart. Marshall Rosenberg |

The heart of him who truly loves is a paradise on earth; he has God in himself, for God is love. —Felicité Robert
de Lamennais
I See the Spirit in You When we see others as spiritual beings, we connect to their divine energy. I have believed this for years. But for many of those years, I would forget the Spirit in another person if we were in conflict. To know that a person is a spiritual being, but then think
they are an insensitive slob or an egotistical bore, is a contradiction. It just doesn’t fit. Today, I know that I may not always enjoy someone’s behavior, but I don’t have to judge them. I can honestly acknowledge my feelings about a situation without denying the Divine in the other person. In fact, just being honest about my feelings is an act of love. I recently said to a friend, in a tone of utter exasperation:“I am so frustrated right now, and I’d really
like to knowthat we can come to a resolution that works for both us. Would you be willing to take a break for an hour so I can calm myself? I think this would help me be more willing to proceed.” I expressed my frustration without judging or blaming her. When we came back together, we were able to resolve the situation and deepen our friendship. Seeing the spiritual being in another person does not mean you never feel angry; it means you know that they are a spiritual being and can still express
your feelings. If you struggle to see the Divine in another person, focus on the needs she is trying to meet through her behavior. Remember that behind every action is a desire to meet a need. Be aware of the spiritual being in everyone you meet today— and in yours |
