How to Really Have Happy Holidays!
Mmmmmm, holidays! Time to relax, enjoy good food, and the sweet company of family and friends. All the festivities can help us get through the dark, cold months of winter. Yet sometimes, our experience around the holidays is stressful.
For one thing, we tend to have more social engagements (all those holiday parties and events), and all of the preparations for the holidays—shopping, cooking, and decorating.
Plus, the people we spend time with can sometimes be among the most challenging people in our lives, be they immediate family members, in-laws, or the boss at the holiday party.
However, the holidays don't need to be difficult and can actually be fun, even in challenging situations. Here are a few things that I do to help me stay sane and enjoy myself around the holidays.

PEACE TALKS: NONVIOLENT COMMUNICATION WITH MARSHALL ROSENBERG (KUNM Airdate: 2/24/06)
This time on Peace Talks, Nonviolent Communication (NVC) with Marshall Rosenberg. NVC is a verbal technology for exchanging information and resolving differences peacefully. Marshall Rosenberg, who founded the NVC technique is captured before a live Albuquerque audience talking about how this communication style helps to resolve conflict. He also helps members of the studio audience develop solutions to conflict
scenarios using the principles of Nonviolent Communication.
Co hosts: Paul Ingles and Suzanne Kryder.
The program was taped at the First Church of Religious Science Auditorium on February 7, 2005.
William Ury and Marshall knew each other and met many times over the years. Marshall introduce the notion of "third sider" from Ury's work to the area of NVC mediation. This interview has some moving stories, especially about the peace process in Colombia and about a Turkish Kurdish dialogue process from a while ago. he speaks also about the role of a community of engaged witnesses and its potential role in addressing collective trauma.
(This one left me longing for that within our own midst.)
Here's a quote of a section i found quite beautiful: "In terms of choices we face when we have a conflict situation, we can fight and try to win; we can submit and accommodate; we can avoid and disengage; or we can engage. Engaging has the assertiveness of fighting without the aggressiveness; it also has the flexibility of accommodation without submission and the detachment of avoidance without disengagement. What’s needed is a kind of mindful, alert,
somewhat detached witnessing engagement."
I hope this is of meaning to some of you.

Basic Pitfalls of Using NVC
When many people first learn NVC, they become so enthusiastic about the possibilities they see unfolding, that they immediately try to put it to use everywhere. Often enough, the results can be disastrous, such that other people become deeply suspicious of NVC. Here is a sample of what people often hear
from others in such circumstances:
“It’s like I’ve got a complete stranger staying in my house.”
“Don’t use this NVC thing on me.”
“What happened to you? Can’t you speak normal?”
“You sound so clinical.”
“Why can’t you just be honest with me and tell me what’s really going on with you?”
"Compassion is about giving all the love that you've
got."
