Nonviolent Communication Skills and Gratitude

People often think of Nonviolent Communication (NVC) as something to be applied only in difficult or challenging situations — something we might use in a conflict.

But NVC is also a powerful way to celebrate life through appreciation and gratitude.

The Power of Gratitude by Stephanie Bachmann Mattei

As we approach the holiday season, which in the US starts with Thanksgiving, I like to revisit my understanding of gratitude and consider how to re-attune myself to this practice. And I invite you to do the same together with me.

Gratitude can be understood as being in awe with the miracle of life, as cultivating a consistent connection with the life force within and all around us. Tapping into this energy, we touch the flow of life and are moved to nourish one another’s hearts by sharing our appreciation.

Practicing gratitude develops a reverence for human relationships and our relationship with all of life. As we practice, we become more and more aware of these relationships and how much they mean to us.

Pumpkin Pie with a Side of Compassion Please By Jan Henrickson

Chances are sugar plums and the weight gain to follow are dancing in your head this time of year. Self-deprecating body jokes are rampant. People are groaning and squeezing their bellies. Everyone's stuffed. Vowing to eat "better" while breaking that vow almost instantly....

How To Host a Smaller, More Virtual Thanksgiving by Amy Maoz

Thanksgiving has always been a holiday of quandaries. How do you cook four main dishes with one oven and a 3pm start time? What’s the best way to change the subject when politics crop up at the dinner table? And why, on this day of all days, are marshmallows considered a perfectly reasonable dinner ingredient? Thanksgiving 2020 comes with its own unique complications and disappointments, not least how to reinvent the holiday with fewer people in attendance or include those dining via screens. Still, it’s possible to celebrate on a smaller scale, enjoy the feast, and start new traditions....

Think about it, says the founder of the New York Center for Nonviolent Communication, Thom Bond, a 63-year-old peace activist and former philosophy major with a professional background in engineering and alternative energy. If people showed more compassion for one another, including themselves, some of the world’s biggest problems would not exist....

“When we give from the heart, we do so out of a joy that springs forth whenever we willingly enrich another person’s life. This kind of giving benefits both the giver and the receiver. The receiver enjoys the gift without worrying about the consequences that accompany gifts given out of fear, guilt, shame, or desire for gain. The giver benefits from the enhanced self-esteem that results when we see our efforts contributing to someone’s well-being.”
Marshall B. Rosenberg

What impact does music have on society?
Music has the power to culturally, morally, and emotionally influence our society. Thus, the more intentional we become with the sounds, messages, and moods we create and release through our music, the more powerful we will become in making deep positive impacts.

"Thanksgiving is one of my favorite days of the year because it reminds us to give thanks and to count our blessings. Suddenly, so many things become so little when we realize how blessed and lucky we are."

Loving Your Body
Are you frustrated with your physical appearance, weight, or choice of foods? Rather than expend energy beating up on yourself about these things, consider looking at the needs you meet by looking and behaving this way. Remember, every action is an attempt to meet a need. If you are eating more than your body requires, what need do you think you are trying to meet...
